A woman awaits the return of a man who enlisted at the front when the Civil War began. He writes her letters from France. She reads them to her children by candlelight. This Penelope does not stay at home knitting during the day and unweaving at night. Years go by and he doesn’t come back. She has stopped receiving letters and doesn’t know what could have happened to him. We are in this part of the world where the dead are piled up in an inextricable charnel house. This is happening in Europe.
